The phrase personal property appraisal is still very confusing to most people and immediately real estate comes to mind when it's actually just the opposite.

Personal property is anything you own that can be moved. Included may be: glassware, furniture, pottery, primitives, jewelry, automobiles, office building furnishings, etc.

You would get a personal property appraisal for insurance if your agency required it, or you might also have one completed on all or a portion of your personal possessions for insurance, estate tax, damage claims, donation, sale, dissolution of marriage or equitable distribution, as collateral for financing or investments, or just out of personal curiousity.
